Customer Review

The Acer Wi-Fi Chromebook shares the distinction of being the first commercial Chromebook with another model by Samsung. The Acer Wi-Fi Chromebook will sell for $349 while the Samsung model will sell for $429 (Wi-Fi) and $499 (Wi-Fi and 3G capable). I have been testing the CR-48 Chromebook for the last five months. During this time I have come to see the positives and the negatives of this device. The Acer Wi-Fi Chromebook will feature an updated Intel Atom processor which should function quite nicely.

I do think that most people will be happy with this device as long as they understand a couple of things:

1. This will not replace your Windows or Mac machine completely. If you use any programs like Photoshop, then you will still have the need for your PC or Mac.

2. You are probably better off buying the Wi-Fi version and using your smart phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot or buying a Wi-Fi Hotspot from a provider like Verizon or Sprint. That way you can use the web on multiple devices instead of just paying for 3G access on your Chromebook.

Here are some Pros and Cons to consider:

Pros

1. Lightweight
2. Extremely long battery life (I typically charge mine every other day)
3. Pretty fast. On the web I find that the Chromebook loads up really fast.
4. Angry Birds - Yeah, they have added an Angry Birds Chrome web app that lets you play Angry Birds.
5. Sandboxing - You can Google this, but just think of it as a added level of web security.
6. Saving on the Cloud - All your files, etc. are linked to the cloud so you are not having to back up your laptop regularly.
7. Regular updates. Google releases updates to Chrome OS about every 2-3 weeks keeping it stable and secure.
8. HDMI output. This is a nice addition for those who will use this on the road or at a friend's house.
9. Netflix, Hulu, and other video streaming sites are supported finally (they were not in the beta test of the CR-48).
10. Supports music streaming from Amazon Cloud service, Google Music, Pandora, etc.

Cons (or possibly just some Considerations)

1. It runs on Chrome OS only. You can't load Windows or Mac based programs. For a lot of people this means they still need their Mac or PC. This is especially true if you run programs like Photoshop. I use Photoshop and Lightroom often. However, I use my Chromebook for just about everything else. This could be an issue for some, but I still wouldn't give up my Chromebook.
2. Cost might be a little high for some. Since this doesn't replace your PC or Mac completely, this price point is near what a tablet might cost (iPad or Xoom?). Personally, I love the form factor and the fact that I have a full keyboard for working rather than a touch screen on a tablet and would choose this over an equally priced tablet. But I figured I would point this out.
3. Early adopting. There is always a chance that the kinks are still being worked out. With Google, I'm pretty sure this won't be the case. My experience with the CR-48 has been great, with regular revisions every few weeks from Google even in the beta phase. Probably not going to be an issue, but again, worth pointing out.
4. No optical drive. You cannot play CDs or DVDs on this device. You must use the USB port or SD card slot. With Netflix, Hulu, and many other options, this is quickly becoming a non-issue. Additionally with being able to store so much to the cloud and USB/SDHC storage, optical storage is not really necessary as much as it used to be. That said, it is a change you have to get used to.

Well, I hope this helps you make your decision. I can easily say that after trying this out for the last few months, I will definitely be buying another when the time comes.

Have only had this laptop for a week but it is awesome. Love the ability to switch between NVidia performance GPU when I have it plugged in and then be able to switch to the 2D Intel mode on battery. The second day I had this laptop I used it for a full 10hours for classes and homework before needing to charge it, and it was still only at 15%. I loved being able to the first weekend throw it into performance mode and play games in high quality graphics mode.

I came from previously owning a 15.6" HP dv6700z laptop. This is a huge improvement at a mid-line price. I love the way the LED screen just pops color at my compared to the old screen. I am now able to go to classes and use my laptop without hunting for plugs and the size is perfect for a mobile laptop that still feels big enough that you aren't leaning in to look at the screen.

I find that the dual core i3 with hyperthreading is perfect even when it is under-clocked on the battery mode. - Spike

The Canon Rebel T3i takes the consumer level dSLR a couple steps closer to the mid-level Canon 60D with the addition of the rotating rear LCD screen, remote flash firing, and in-camera processing features. The already highly competent, older Rebel T2i already shared many important features with the 60D (and even features of the semi-pro 7D) including the 18 MP sensor, 63-zone exposure metering system, high ISO performance, HD movie capabilities, and Digic 4 image processor. With these new upgrades, it might make it even more difficult to choose between them. But there are some important differences.

If you are considering the Rebel T3i vs T2i, the Rebel T3i is replacing the T2i. Since both cameras share the same 18 megapixel sensor and Digic 4 processor, both the T2i and T3i will create images with exactly the same image quality, produce the same low light-high ISO performance, shoot at 3.7 frames per second, and have nearly the same size and build quality. They are both offered with the same 18-55mm kit lens (with some minor cosmetic differences on the new T3i kit lens). The T3i is very slightly larger and heavier due to the addition of the rotating rear LCD monitor. And that is one of the biggest differences between the two cameras. Do you want and need a vari-angle rear screen or not? The other major difference is the ability of the T3i to remotely control multiple off-camera flashes. Like the 60D and 7D, you can use the built-in flash of the T3i to trigger other Canon Speedlites. Some other minor additions to the T3i include the Scene Intelligent Auto Mode, which is a feature borrowed from point and shoot cameras. When in Auto mode, the T3i will make a determination of what type of scene you are shooting - close-up, portrait, landscape, etc. - and automatically configure the camera settings accordingly. However, if you want to use a powerful and costly digital SLR as a point and shoot, you should probably save the money and just buy a nice, high quality point and shoot like the Canon S95. Other additional but not essential upgrades include the in-camera processing Creative Filters, and the ability to choose different image size ratios and to rate your images. There is also a marginally helpful Feature Guide which gives brief descriptions of various settings and some additional video features like Video Snapshot, which you can use to shoot short video clips that are automatically joined together into a video, with music.

My first SLR..What a good choice for me. It came naturally since I've been using Canon's point and shoot camera's for 35 years. I haven't put it down since I brought if home. Yes, I'm new, and YUP, its fast, accurate and the LCD w/o a doubt is clear, and super fun. My husband was drying our pretty Papillon, I was laying on the bed, taking pics upside down, why, cuz I could! I love how you can take pics at just about every which way your laying, standing, whatever way, its great! Since the SLR is new to me, I have some learning, but so far, it's GREAT. Images are super sharp, clear and despite I don't have a zoom lens, its pretty sweet. We had a nice sunset tonight, and images VERY crisp, and beautiful, along w/ the color.

I purchased this hand blender to make a cream of carrot soup that I had seen in a recent issue of my Southern Living magazine. My husband said that a regular mixer/blender would not give me the results I would want and that I needed one of these blenders. I compared several of these products and settled on this version because of the Cuisinart name and the great pricing. It arrived sooner than expected and a couple days later I used it in making the soup. The product directions and tips were great, and my soup turned out perfectly and delicious! The texture was amazing. I just made the soup again over the weekend while my in-laws were in town, and my mother-in-law loved the soup and asked about the blender. So, I think I will be ordering another one as a gift for her. The only thing about the blender is cleaning it. It comes apart very easily so you can wash it; however, I recommend rinsing very well right after using so you don't get any dried particles up under the blade area where it is hard to reach. Otherwise, I absolutely love this blender and can't wait to find other recipes in which to use it!

"The overall quality of sound is very good - much better than my old speakers. They're not as loud as my old ones, probably because the individual wattage of the L&R speakers is less, but they're still better. Matrix mode button on the remote basically forces 5.0 from 2.0. If someone is looking for really loud speakers they should probably get ones with more than 80 watts per channel.

The headphone jack on the volume control is kinda lame, though... the control is too light for any movement of your head/body/rolling around in your rolly chair - it just drags the volume control all over, which pulls on the cords. So I just use the jack on my tower. The L&R channel speakers could use longer cords. L channel cord barely reaches from the sub to the left side of my desk. They're about 48 inches, but the rear speakers have about 15 ft to play with and I have them on the other side of my room. " - elderdruid

Lovely watch, great price, recommended!

I note that the price has crept upward since I bought this watch a couple of weeks ago, but at around £50 it is still good value. The watch looks great, it isn't too dressy so can be worn as a fashion watch as well as a formal one. The watch bracelet looks great with its crossover design and the watch face is attractively finished with the 4 crystals at the 12,3,6,9 positions. The bracelet has two size adjusting links which can be removed easily to fit smaller wrists. The packaging is excellent - typical DKNY box, and while accompanying charm is probably too big for your mobile phone (it's about 3 inches long) it would look good attached to a handbag. The Bottom Line

The MacBook Air is a very divisive design. Either you will love it or you will hate it. Design wise it is a beatuiful system that is extremely small and light. The problem is that it lacks a number of standard laptop features that it is very hard to really recommend it to anyone as their sole system. It is really best used as a business travel system in conjunction with another primary PC.

Guide Review - Apple MacBook Air

2/26/08 – One of the main reasons that the MacBook Air is so small is due to the specially designed processor. It is closely related to the Core 2 Duo L7500 model in terms of its speed and cache, but the physical design is smaller than the normal mobile processor. Performance is good, but it will vary depending upon which performance mode is selected in the OS. The 2GB of DDR2 memory allow it to run the Mac OS X operating system without any issues.

The base MacBook Air notebook uses a smaller 1.8-inch hard drive that stores 80GB of data. This is a fairly limited amount of space but is adequate for those using it as a system during business travel. In order to have such small dimensions, Apple did not include a built-in optical drive. Users wishing to have an optical drive will need to purchase th external DVD writer which adds to the cost and weight of the system.

Graphics wise the MacBook Air is spectacular. The 13.3-inch screen is very easy to read and use and features an LED back light. The system uses the Intel XGA 3100 integrated graphics which is common in the ultraportable market. Don't expect to do much 3D work with this. A webcam is built into the upper portion of the bezel.

The big problem with the MacBook Air is its expansion ability. In order to produce the really sleek design, Apple sacrificed a large number of external connectors. There are only three connectors under a door on the right side: a USB 2.0, mini-DVI and audio out. This makes it extremely difficult to connect external devices to it. In fact, use of the external DVD uses up the only available USB port. The battery is also contained within the chassis and can't be swapped like many other notebooks.

How to Make a Network Cable

The steps below are general Ethernet Category 5 (commonly known as Cat 5 or "Cable and Telephone") cable construction guidelines. For our example, we will be making a Category 5e patch cable, but these instructions will work for making any category of network cables.

Steps

Unroll the required length of network cable and add a little extra, just in case. If a boot is to be fitted, do so before stripping away the sleeve and ensure the boot faces the correct way.
Carefully remove the outer jacket of the cable, exposing about 1 1/4" (30 mm) of the twisted pairs. Be careful when stripping the jacket as to not nick or cut the internal wiring. After removing the outer case, you will notice 8 wires twisted in 4 pairs. Each pair will have one wire of a certain color and another wire that is white with a colored stripe matching its partner (this wire is called a tracer). Sometimes a rip cord (white thread) is also present.
Inspect the newly revealed wires for any cuts or scrapes that expose the copper wire inside. If you have breached the protective sheath of any wire, you will need to cut the entire segment of wires off and start over at step one. Exposed copper wire will lead to cross-talk, poor performance or no connectivity at all. It is important that the jacket for all network cables remains intact.
Untwist the pairs so they will lay flat between your fingers. The white piece of thread can be cut off even with the jacket and disposed (see Warnings).
Arrange the wires based on the wiring specifications you are following. There are two methods set by the TIA, 568A and 568B. 568B is the most common for network cables, widely used for computer networks and digital phone systems. For our demonstration we will use that (568A will require a different order, see Tips). Put the wires in the following order, from left to right:
1. white/orange
2. orange
3. white/green
4. blue
5. white/blue
6. green
7. white/brown
8. brown
Press all the wires flat and parallel between your thumb and forefinger. Verify the colors have remained in the correct order. Cut the top of the wires even with one another so that they are 3/4" (19 mm) long from the base of the jacket. Ensure that the cut leaves the wires even and clean; failure to do so may cause the wire not to make contact inside the jack and could lead to wrongly guided cores inside the plug.
Keep the wires flat and in order as you push them into the RJ-45 plug with the flat surface of the plug on top. The white/orange wire should be on the left if you're looking down at the jack. You can tell if all the wires made it into the jack and maintain their positions by looking head-on at the plug. You should be able to see a wire located in each hole, as seen at the bottom right. You may have to use a little effort to push the pairs firmly into the plug. The cabling jacket should also enter the rear of the jack about 1/4" (6 mm) to help secure the cable once the plug is crimped. You may need to stretch the sleeve to the proper length. Verify that the sequence is still correct before crimping.
Place the wired plug into the crimping tool. Give the handle a firm squeeze. You should hear a ratcheting noise as you continue. Once you have completed the crimp, the handle will reset to the open position.
Repeat all of the above steps with the other end of the cable. The way you wire the other end (568A or 568B) will depend on whether you're making a straight-through or cross-over cable (see Tips).
Test the cable to ensure that it will function in the field. Mis-wired and incomplete network cables could lead to headaches down the road. In addition, with power-over-Ethernet (PoE) making its way into the market place, crossed wire pairs could lead to physical damage of computers or phone system equipment, making it even more crucial that the pairs are in the correct order. A simple cable tester can quickly verify that information for you. Should you not have a network cable tester on hand, simply test connectivity pin to pin.
